Beat the Monster
The site has been in the making for a while. I am very excited to launch it. So many people are struggling with bad habits and addictions. It has been my pleasure for years to help people change.
I am originally from Denmark, and my family and I go back at least once a year. This summer, while enjoying my vacation, I had an “AHA!” moment. I was shocked to see entire families who were morbidly obese. At the supermarket, I looked into their shopping carts. No wonder their health was going down the tubes! The number of overweight Danes is increasing every year.
That is when the idea of this website came alive. I felt a need to help the ones who really want to change and Beat The Monster!

In Denmark, a usual ambulance is geared to handle people up to 148 kgs, however, due to the increase in obesity, they have had to upgrade a number of ambulances to handle people that are over 200 kgs.
Food is easy to access in the western world, and it makes you feel good! A lot of food is comfort food. You get together with your friends and food is usually a very important part of that. You sit in front of the TV and what do you do? Eat! Most things today are mega-sized. A Mars bar is definitely bigger than when I was a kid, so the calorie intake is much higher.
We all know this, so why are so many people so fat? The culture and the values are changing. Many people accept that this is now the standard. “Enjoy life while you have it” is a lot easier than thinking about the long-term consequences to yourself and others. It is a lot easier to eat junk food than exercise and eat healthy food.
I know how this works. When I worked in Vietnam many years ago, I was not getting along with the local cuisine, so I was very excited when the first proper pizza restaurant, Annie’s Pizza, opened in HCMC in the early 90s. Quickly, I built up a solid pizza habit and I ended up being their biggest customer with a 6% market share. At that point, I consumed more pizza than the second ranked customer, who was not a person but a company! It was a the Australian company BNP that had 35 expats in HCMC. Yes, I had lots of pizza!
During those years we had a popular saying: “You are not a real man, if you are below 100 kgs.” I lived up to that and I reached 110 kgs, which was my max weight. At that time, I also smoked a lot and I exercised very little. One day I looked in the mirror, and I said: “This is not who I am. This is not what I stand for. Things have to change, and it starts now.” I started a diet and over the next 5 months, I lost 25 kgs.
Since then I have never looked back, and while my weight may fluctuate up and down with a few kgs, I will never ever go back. In 2005, I stopped smoking after 18 years. Again, I had finally had enough and smoking was not in line with my identity and standards.
This is not only about addiction to food or cigarettes. There are many monsters out there, and whatever monster is hiding under your bed, we are here to help you beat it.
This site is not for people, who want to hang out with other addicts and make excuses. This site is for people who are ready to make real changes. They might have tried, tried and tried but failed to kick their addiction because relapses do happen. That is OK. The point is that you are ready to step up and do whatever it takes to make it happen.
If you are, welcome to Beat the Monster!
Metallica has written a song called “Some kind of Monster!” Addictions and bad habits are indeed some kind of monsters! So let’s get started and kick some serious butt!

Yowza… Great Blog and website idea and cyber meeting place!
I’ve been fighting the weight monster for over 3 decades! As a cartoonist, I’d often vent my feelings in ink, and finally put over 3 decades of sketches, thoughts, etc. into one book… ‘The Dieter’s Butt-Kicking Mental Image Notebook’. See http://www.cartoonbob.com/dmin for some drawings from the book.
